Gov. Greg Abbott has directed the Public Utility Commission of Texas and ERCOT to conduct a comprehensive verification and audit of data centers advancing through ERCOT’s interconnection process before those projects move forward.

The governor’s directive calls for information on public incentives, projected electricity use, on-site generation, water demand and cooling technology, community protections and project ownership.

Abbott’s office said ERCOT was considering more than 474 gigawatts of connection requests and that roughly 90 percent of the new power requests were associated with data centers.

What the audit does — and does not do

The order is aimed at projects seeking ERCOT grid connections. It should not be treated as a universal statewide moratorium on every data-center development or every form of on-site generation.

Requiring basic information about ownership, subsidies, water, power and neighborhood impacts should have been the starting point, not a late-stage corrective after hundreds of gigawatts entered the queue. Williamson County residents deserve the same level of disclosure for projects that may rely heavily on private on-site generation.
